How much does a golf ball actually weigh? Why is it covered with hundreds of small dents – the so-called dimples? And what exactly are lake balls? Golf has a reputation for being a sport full of unwritten rules – and this applies not only to etiquette on the course, but also to the equipment. This is precisely why people are often afraid to ask these seemingly simple questions. <\/p>

In this article, we have collected nine answers to questions about golf balls that you have probably already asked yourself but were afraid to say out loud: from the internal structure and correct marking to lake balls, range balls and the question of whether you can actually use a golf ball for mini golf.<\/p>

What is a golf ball actually made of?<\/h2>

In fact, there are more layers than you might think.<\/p>

Modern golf balls are small, high-tech products and are referred to as 2-piece, 3-piece, 4-piece, 5-piece or even 6-piece balls, depending on the number of inner layers.<\/p>

The basic principle is always similar: inside is a core – in the past almost always hard rubber, today often multi-layered from different hard or soft materials. Depending on the model, there are additional layers around this core, each of which takes on different tasks: longer distance, more control, softer feel, more spin around the greens. <\/p>

The outer shell is usually made of one of two materials: ionomer (often known as Surlyn) is mainly found in balls for beginners and distance balls because the material is very hard and robust. And then there is urethane. This material is softer, has a better grip on the racket and allows for more spin. Urethane is the material of choice for tour balls such as the Titleist Pro V1. <\/p>

Are there differences in golf balls?<\/h2>

Yes, quite a few actually.<\/p>

As you have just learned, golf balls differ in terms of their construction and the number of layers they are made of. They also differ in their degree of hardness. <\/p>

The compression, i.e. the degree of hardness, indicates how much a ball deforms when hit. Low values (e.g. 80) are soft and well suited for slower swings and beginners. Higher values (90-110) need more club head speed to develop their potential. As a result, the balls also differ in their playing character. <\/p>

Manufacturers usually position their models in categories such as Distance (maximum length), Soft (soft feel) or Tour Performance (control and spin). The dimples also differ in number, shape and arrangement from manufacturer to manufacturer. <\/p>

Why does a golf ball have dimples?<\/h2>

Because of the physics. A smooth ball would only fly a fraction of the distances – specifically about a quarter. <\/p>

The reason: When air flows past a smooth ball, it detaches from the surface relatively early and a large turbulent flow field (“wake”) is created behind the ball. This wake creates air resistance, which slows the ball down. <\/p>

The dimples create a thin, turbulent boundary layer directly on the surface of the ball. This turbulent layer sticks to the ball for longer, the wake behind it becomes smaller – and this drastically reduces the air resistance. <\/p>

At the same time, the backspin helps: The rotation creates a pressure difference between the top and bottom of the ball (Magnus effect), which pushes the ball upwards. Lift plus reduced resistance = the typical wide, high flight curves that we know from TV. <\/p>

The number of dimples is typically between 300 and 450, but is not officially prescribed. Manufacturers vary the shape (round, hexagonal, oval) and arrangement in order to optimize flight characteristics – a small field of research in its own right. <\/p>

How much does a golf ball weigh?<\/h2>

Maximum 45.93 grams. This is stipulated by the official rules of the R&A and the USGA – the two associations that set the rules of golf worldwide.The minimum diameter limit is 42.67 millimetres. <\/p>

Interesting detail: There is no lower limit for weight and no upper limit for diameter. In practice, however, manufacturers make full use of the permitted leeway because heavier and smaller balls tend to fly further. <\/p>

Incidentally, until 1990 there was still a British and an American standard – the “British ball” was allowed to be slightly smaller with a diameter of 1.62 inches. Since 1990, everyone worldwide has been playing with the same size. <\/p>

What is the difference between a golf ball and a mini golf ball?<\/h2>

Bigger than most people realize. A golf ball is standardized, as you have just learned. These standards do not exist for a mini golf ball. <\/p>

The diameter of mini golf balls varies between 37 and 43 mm and the weight between 30 and 150 grams. The hardness is measured in Shore and ranges from 25 (soft like rubber) to 100 (rock hard). The surface also differs: tournament mini golf balls are usually smooth – only the “public balls” for occasional players have dimple-like dents. <\/p>

The reason for this variety: in minigolf, the ball is constantly in contact with the lane, the behavior of the cushion and smoothness play a decisive role – and they depend massively on the material, hardness and surface. Competitive players therefore often own 100 to 300 different balls and choose the right model for each course. <\/p>

Can I also play mini golf with a golf ball?<\/h3>

A golf ball on a miniature golf course? With its size, weight and surface, it would roll completely differently – and therefore make little sense on the courses. <\/p>

Why do you actually have to paint golf balls?<\/h2>

Because otherwise you won’t be able to identify your ball as yours without a doubt – and that can cost you penalty strokes.<\/p>

The official Rules of Golf of the R&A regulate this quite clearly. According to Rule 6.3a, you are considered responsible for playing your own ball. If your ball is not clearly identifiable and you play the wrong one, this is an offense with a basic penalty. And if you cannot find or identify your ball at all, it is considered lost – this costs you a penalty stroke and distance. <\/p>

The imprint number on the ball is often not enough. If your flight partner happens to be playing the same Titleist Pro V1 with the same number as you, the number won’t help you. This is exactly why the R&A recommends that you mark each ball with a personal identification before the round: a waterproof pen, a few dots, a line, your initials – whatever you can remember and which clearly differs from standard markings. <\/p>

Incidentally, marking has long since become a brand among professionals: Justin Rose is known for three dots, Rickie Fowler for an orange line, others for their initials or symbols. A little piece of identity on every ball – with a very practical background to the rules. <\/p>

Why are range balls not allowed on the course?<\/h2>

For two reasons: They play differently, and they’re not yours.<\/p>

Range balls – usually marked with a stripe or the word “Range” or “Practice” on the shell – are in most cases simple 1-piece balls: a piece of hard rubber with dimples, painted over. This makes them cheap to produce and robust for continuous use, but they fly around 20% shorter than a regular cue ball and also react differently to the club. <\/p>

If you regularly practise on the range with range balls and then go out onto the course with a normal cue ball, you will be disappointed with the distance impression when you compare the balls directly.<\/p>

The second reason is more mundane, but just as important: range balls are the property of the club and are simply often lost on the course. You rent them from the ball machine in quantities of typically 15-30. Playing with range balls on the course is tantamount to taking club property – and if you are repeatedly caught with them, you risk being sent off. <\/p>

What are lakeballs?<\/h2>

Lakeballs are used golf balls that are salvaged from the water hazards of golf courses, cleaned, sorted and resold.<\/p>

In Germany alone, around 40 million golf balls are lost every year. This equates to almost 2,000 tons of material, most of which ends up in ponds and lakes on golf courses. As it takes up to 1,000 years for a golf ball to decompose at the bottom of a body of water, this is not insignificant from an environmental point of view. This is precisely where the lakeball business comes in: specialized diving companies regularly retrieve the balls from the water hazards of their partner clubs. <\/p>

After recovery, the balls are cleaned and sorted according to quality.<\/p>
