FAQ: Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship

Can Anyone Still Beat Max Verstappen?

Technically, yes – even if the odds are slim. There are still 10 races left in the 2024 season, and Red Bull has been struggling with technical issues lately. That leaves a narrow window of opportunity for challengers.
Still, Max Verstappen remains the strong favorite to secure yet another F1 World Championship title this year.

F1 Points System Explained

In Formula 1, only the top 10 finishers earn points in each race. The distribution is based on position:

1st place = 25 points
2nd = 18 points
3rd = 15 points
4th = 12 points
5th = 10 points
6th = 8 points
7th = 6 points
8th = 4 points
9th = 2 points
10th = 1 point

Bonus point: The driver who sets the fastest lap in the race receives 1 additional point, but only if they finish within the top 10. If not, the point is not awarded.

Driver vs. Constructor Championship – What’s the Difference?

Formula 1 crowns two World Champions at the end of each season:
Drivers’ Championship: Awarded to the individual driver with the most points.
Constructors’ Championship: Awarded to the team with the highest combined points from both its drivers.

This means that while one team might have the best driver, another team could still win the constructors’ title if both of their drivers consistently score well.

Naturally, every F1 team dreams of winning both championships. The Drivers’ title brings prestige, while the Constructors’ title also comes with major prize money. The higher a team finishes in the constructors’ standings, the bigger their payout from Formula 1.
